About this campground
Chewaucan Crossing Campground is a highly used but primitive camping area ideally located right on the Chewaucan River in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. The campground features five campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, set in a scenic high desert environment dotted with ponderosa pine and juniper trees. A vault toilet and adequate parking with trailer turnaround are provided. The campground serves as the trailhead for Fremont National Recreation Trail #160, a challenging multi-use trail that can be hiked, mountain biked, or ridden on horseback. A pedestrian bridge crosses the river to link with the trail, which heads north to Yamsay Mountain or south to Cox Pass.

Both directions require climbing out of the river canyon, making for a strenuous trek. The free-flowing Chewaucan River provides excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow and brook trout. This is a pack-in, pack-out site with no potable water, trash service, or fees. Visitors should come prepared with adequate drinking water and plan to remove all trash.
