It contains some of the most outstanding open moorland and impressive wooded valleys found anywhere in the country. You will find a wealth of unspoilt treasures waiting for your exploration, littered with old bastles and fortified houses, that once belonged to the feuding Reivers Clans and it also houses some of the best preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall, between Gilsland and Chollerford, right on the doorstep of Greencarts Farm.Kielder is home to the largest man-made lake in Europe. Set deep in the vastness of Kielder Forest it is one of Britain's largest nature resorts and home to the rare red squirrel along with many other species of wildlife. Some of the activities for your enjoyment at Kielder include sailing, fishing, walking, watersports etc. .Alnwick Castle is a magnificent medieval castle dating back to the 11th century, and is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Northumberland. The current Duke still lives at the castle which is open to the public and houses one of the finest, privately owned, collections of art work in Britain. You may recognise the castle and grounds from films such as Harry Potter, Blackadder and Elizabeth. The Alnwick Garden, once a derelict plot of land, is now a magical landscape of stimulating, contemporary gardens to have been created in the last century. The design of the garden is unique and combines quiet, peaceful spots with exciting, busy spaces for everyone to enjoy. The children will love the water sculptures and are encouraged to interact and get wet. There are also some great National Trust properties/sites in the area.
