State Road 112, Tierra Amarilla, NM, 87575, Jump to Photos El Vado Lake State Park Campground New Mexico El Vado Lake State Park Overview El Vado Lake State Park has 3 campgrounds with a total of 80 single-family campsites situation around the lake. There are 17 with electric & water hookups, and 2 full hookup sites. Group camping and primitive beach/boat-in camping are also available. Campground amenities include potable water, flush & vault toilet, showers and a dump station. There’s also a playground, 25 picnic areas, a boat ramp, boat rentals and marina. Our favorite campsites include: Grassy Point #17 and Pinion Beach #62. El Vado Lake State Park – Area Recreation Located at about 7,200 feet in elevation in New Mexico’s northern mountains, the Park offers a fantastic opportunity to view bald eagles, red-tail hawks, ospreys and other migrating birds during the winter. During the summer, it’s also a popular destination to enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, scuba diving, water-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, hunting and wildlife viewing.  A 5.5-mile scenic trail along the Rio Chama connects El Vado with nearby Heron Lake and is a nice hike year round (snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the winter). Heron Lake State Park is another nice facility to consider. It has 114 developed campsites along Heron Lake. One Comment on “El Vado Lake State Park” Adrian says: Jul 31 2018 at 9:17 am Was looking to get away for the city for a while I went July 27 through the 29th. Two weeks before I went I went on Google and saw that the leak was really low I called the Ranger and told him that I wanted to go swimming he move my campsite and there is just no way I would ever get into that water it was so low that There were a bunch of flies and it stunk. I’m sure at one point this was probably the nicest leak in New Mexico but I would recommend not going anytime soon until it fills up!
