About this campground
Big Spring Brook Campsite is a remote, primitive backcountry campsite located along the East Branch of the Penobscot River within Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. This boat-access-only site sits approximately 10.7 miles south of the bridge near Matagamon Wilderness Camps and is marked by a small wooden sign at the top of the cut bank. The campsite offers a shaded setting with basic amenities including one picnic table and one metal fire ring. As a true backcountry experience, campers must be self-sufficient and prepared for primitive conditions. There are no toilets, water, or any facilities at this site. All drinking water must be carried in or treated from the river.

Campfires require a free Maine Forest Service campfire permit and are only allowed in the designated fire ring. The site accommodates tent camping only and provides an excellent opportunity for paddlers seeking solitude along this scenic river corridor. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov during the operating season, with unreserved sites available first-come, first-served on the day of arrival. The remote location and boat-only access make this an ideal destination for experienced paddlers looking for a wilderness camping experience in northern Maine.
