About this campground
Dundo Group Campground is located at milepost 83.7 along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, with the Appalachian Trail passing directly through the site. The campground previously featured three large, grassy group tent sites shaded by native oaks and mature pines, accommodating groups of 7 to 20 people. The southern end of the area is a picnic ground and the northern end was the campground. Due to water safety concerns identified by the Virginia Department of Health with the raw water source, the campground is permanently closed for camping as of February 2024.

The water system had not provided potable water for several years, and VDH determined that water could no longer be provided even with signage warning users. As a result, all group camping has been moved to Loft Mountain Campground at mile 79.5, which now offers additional group sites. The Dundo picnic grounds remain open to visitors, with a vault toilet available. However, fires of any kind, including charcoal, are prohibited due to the lack of water. The area still provides access to excellent hiking opportunities on the Appalachian Trail, Doyles River Trail, and many other popular trails in Shenandoah's South District.
