About this campground
Summit Lake North Campground is located at the midpoint of the 30-mile park highway in Lassen Volcanic National Park at 6,700 feet elevation. The campground features 46 reservable sites divided into Loop A and Loop B, positioned on the north side of Summit Lake. Sites accommodate up to 3 tents, 6 people, and 2 vehicles per site, with a mix of standard and tent-only sites available. No hookups are provided. The campground serves as a central base for exploring the park's 150 miles of hiking trails. The Cluster Lakes loop trail, a major trailhead into the park's interior that passes several alpine lakes, is located a short walk from the Summit Lake Ranger Station.

This is the closest campground to the Lassen Peak Trail, eight miles away, and within 10 miles of the Bumpass Hell hydrothermal area. A picnic area on the lake shore offers swimming access. Educational programs are presented at the campground's amphitheater. Lassen Volcanic National Park sits at the junction of the Cascade Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the Great Basin, creating diverse habitats that support over 700 flowering plant species and 250 native animal species. The park contains 300 active volcanic domes and numerous hydrothermal features including mud pots and steam vents. Some facilities and areas remain closed following the 2021 Dixie Fire, with hazards like fallen trees and loose rock present in re-opened areas.
