About this campground

Seventeen Mile Primitive Camp sits at the southeastern edge of the Big Gum Swamp Wilderness in Osceola National Forest, offering a genuine backcountry camping experience for those seeking solitude. This primitive hunt camp is accessible via CR 250, approximately 2 miles west of the intersection with CR 229. The site provides free, dispersed camping year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no amenities. The campground is primarily used as a hunt camp during general gun season, but is available to all campers throughout the year. Visitors should be prepared for a true primitive experience with no drinking water, restrooms, or other facilities on-site.

The location provides access to the surrounding forest and wilderness areas for hiking, hunting, and exploring the unique ecosystems of this small but ecologically significant national forest. Campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. A 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period applies to all camping in Osceola National Forest. The area connects to the larger biodiversity corridor linking to the Okefenokee Swamp and offers opportunities to experience Florida's natural landscape away from developed recreation sites.
