The park's historic significance centers on the Savanna Portage Trail, once traveled by fur traders, Dakota and Ojibwe Indians, and explorers over 200 years ago. Savanna Portage State Park sits on the Continental Divide, where water flows either west to the Mississippi River or east to Lake Superior. The park features rolling hills, lakes, and tamarack peat bogs within a northern hardwood forest dominated by birch, aspen, and conifers. Wildlife viewing opportunities include loons, waterfowl, and various forest species throughout the park's extensive trail system.
