About this campground

San Juan Cua Campground is a dispersed camping area situated in the Toiyabe Range of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, approximately 31 miles south of Austin via SR 722, County Road 21, and FR 016. The campground sits in an open setting that offers sweeping views of the surrounding canyon landscape. This is a primitive camping area with no developed facilities, water, or restrooms. Campers must be completely self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The campground serves as a gateway to the Toiyabe Crest National Recreation Trail, accessible via the San Juan Trailhead located at the campground.

The area receives light use, making it ideal for those seeking solitude in a remote mountain setting. County Road 21, which provides access to the campground, intersects and in places follows the historic Austin-Grantville Stage Route that operated from 1861 to 1866, adding historical interest to the area. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on leash while in the campground area. Certified weed-free hay is required for stock animals.
