Open to the public, the Retreat is located just five (5) miles west of Mayhill, New Mexico at an altitude near 7,000 feet it is a ‘cool’ place in the summer, excellent summer weather with those cool evenings by the campfire and not too warm days for an excellent afternoon of exercise of sport or hiking. In the summer of 1969 an open invitation was sent to everyone to the first work weekend at Sacramento Mountain Retreat. Work had been in progress for several weekends digging for the septic tank and leach field but this was the first day everyone was invited to participate. There was at the least 35 men and more boys that day as the land was prepared for the foundation for the first bathhouse. We had one cement mixer that would hold possibly one half cubic yard. It took all day. The first reunions were very basic. Overtime the cafeteria and rustic cabins and the Large Meeting Hall were built using the Ponderosa Pine trees cut down in clearing the land. A local lumber sawyer ruff cut the lumber saving a bundle of money over lumberyard prices. In fact most all labor was donated in the building of the retreat. RV spaces were added for the convenience of those who brought theirs to camp. The Meadow was outfitted for sports programs as baseball, volleyball, archery, soccer and a covered half-court basketball court was put in place. Of course no camping program would be complete without a “campfire pit” complete with bleachers for those evenings dedicated to fun and songs. In 2016 the Board of Directors initiated an aggressive expansion project in conjunction with the Rio Grande Mission Center to purchase a new building containing eight bunk rooms for 4 people each and each room with bath and shower. It also has a large common sitting/kitchen room which can and has been used for ‘board meetings’. The view from the 40 foot long porch is as one would expect “a sight to behold”, Deer, bear and Elk have been seen from this vantage point. For 48 years the Sacramento Mountain Retreat has been in indelible part of the life of our church families as well as the lives of the hundreds, even thousands who have leased this camp for their own families or church retreat activities.
