About this campground
Ravens Roost Cabin sits atop a mountain on Mitkof Island in the Tongass National Forest, offering a scenic alpine retreat at 1,745 feet elevation. This custom-built 16x20-foot cabin is the only Forest Service cabin accessible by trail from Petersburg, making it a unique destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The cabin features wooden bunks on the main floor and a sleeping loft that can accommodate up to 8 guests, along with a covered deck, table and benches, propane heater, and an outhouse with pit toilet. The cabin is accessed via the Raven Trail, a steep and challenging 4.2-mile hike from the trailhead at the water towers behind Petersburg Airport.

The trail gains 1,800 feet in elevation, with a moderate first mile, very steep middle section, and flatter final mile along the ridge top. Hikers should allow approximately 3 hours for ascent. The cabin can also be reached by helicopter for those preferring aerial access. The surrounding terrain features flat muskeg interspersed with steep mountain slopes. During summer months, the muskegs bloom with wildflowers and berries, while winter transforms the area into popular terrain for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. A winter ski trail to the south connects to Twin Creeks Road. Wildlife in the area includes eagles, moose, deer, porcupines, and black bears. From the cabin's location, visitors enjoy panoramic views of Wrangell Narrows and Kupreanof Island to the west. Guests must bring their own water or treat water from nearby muskeg pools or melted snow, as no fresh water source is available.
