About this campground
Now for something completely different. It’s not every day you get to camp on a floating island, but here’s your chance, for Tamaya Titicaca Camping is set on one of the Uros Islands, floating gently on the calm waters of Lake Titicaca near the border between Bolivia and Peru. Created by tying together totora reeds in the shallow waters of the lake, these artificial islets are the traditional homes of the Uru people as well as the main sightseeing attractions around the waterside city of Puno – the gateway to your watery adventure.

Accessed by kayak (guests are provided with a free kayak to paddle themselves) from Puno in half an hour, Tamaya Titicaca is a quiet spot for meditating, yoga sessions and wild swimming in the lake – as well as admiring the colourful sunrises and sunsets. The owners of the site are happy to organise kayaking and fishing expeditions as well as tours to other islands (for an extra charge), and will happily take time to explain the structure of their islands and give insights into Uru heritage. Generally speaking, facilities here are fairly basic, but meals are available for an extra charge, and you will have access to a hot shower in a private bathroom. In all, it's a pretty good way to immerse yourself in the experience of the highly unusual culture of the Uru people and their floating homes.
