About this campground

Prairie Dog State Park is located southwest of Norton, Kansas on the north side of the Keith Sebelius Reservoir (lake) and Norton Wildlife Area. To get to the Prairie Dog State Park from Norton: From the east: take highway 36 west out of Norton, then turn south on highway 261. From the west: take highway 36 east, turn south on highway 261. Office hours: we are open on Monday - Friday 8am - 4pm, closed Saturday and Sunday. General InformationTo enter a Kansas State park, the vehicle must have a vehicle permit. Anything with a steering wheel and a motor needs a vehicle permit. If you tow a vehicle into a park, as soon as you disconnect it, it needs its own vehicle permit.Motorcycles? Yes.

Your trailer camper? No. Your RV that you drive into the park? Yes. A bicycle, including e-bikes? No. A golf cart or a side-by-side? Yes, those need a special UTV "Unconventional Vehicle" permit, they are available only as an annual permit, are more expensive, and can be purchased at a state park office or a regional office.Historical interpretation is a hallmark of Prairie Dog State Park. Two vintage 19th century buildings are preserved here, including a one room school and renovated adobe house. These campgrounds are Shady Rest, Prairie Dog, Cedar Ridge, and Branded Cedar campgrounds.Until April, there are two trash dumpsters located in the park, one at the modern cabins, and one in Branded Cedar campground. You can put your trash in these dumpsters or take your trash with you. Please do not leave trash on the sidewalk at the office, raccoons will get into the bags and spread the trash around. Thanks!Keith Sebelius Reservoir is well known for its excellent fishing opportunities. Anglers continue to find productive fishing for black bass, walleye, wiper, crappie, catfish and saugeye.The 6,400-acre Norton Wildlife Area offers good prospects for quail, pheasant, waterfowl and rabbits. Both whitetail and mule deer can be found here, as well as a variety of furbearers.Check the water level at Keith Sebelius Reservoir here. You can also find other information, and you can run a report at the bottom of that webpage for one month or for one year. The report will show things such as inflow, water level, precipitation, and more.Fishing bait is available in Norton. T & D Bait Shop is operated at a house 1 block east of the Post Office, and 1/2 block south. Worms are for sale at the Alta convenience store and at Bomgaars. Camping at Prairie Dog State ParkFirst, the cabins at Prairie Dog State Park include 4 reservable cabins, all of which are nice on the inside and have air conditioning, heat, refrigerator & freezer, and microwave (2 modern cabins with a nice bathroom and kitchen, and 2 primitive cabins with no kitchen and located close to a shower house with bathrooms and vault toilets). Then for camping, there are 10 electric/water/sewer (full hookup) sites, 79 electric/water sites, and more than 130 primitive sites. Reservable sites include all 89 utility sites and most of our "mushroom" sites. The primitive areas that have no utilities are all first-come first-served sites. Shower and restroom facilities are conveniently located, as are two RV dump stations (one on the west side and one on the east side). A 1.4-mile nature trail complete with Story Walk signage for kids is a great way to explore the park and observe wildlife. Learn more about State Park Entrance and Camping Fees here.
