About this campground
Three Lakes Shelter is a historic three-sided Adirondack-style shelter located on Shelter Lake, nestled between Sand and Hill Lakes along the Three Lakes Loop Trail system on Mitkof Island. The shelter was originally constructed in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was dismantled and rebuilt in 2006 as part of the National Historic Preservation efforts. This is a day-use facility that provides a sheltered rest area for hikers exploring the Three Lakes Trail system. The shelter sits in a stand of tall trees along the shoreline in the lush temperate rainforest typical of Southeast Alaska.

The surrounding area offers opportunities for non-motorized boating, fishing in the nearby lakes, and hiking through dense forest. The site is located approximately 14 miles southeast of Petersburg via the Mitkof Highway and Three Lakes Loop Road. As a day-use shelter, this is not intended for overnight camping. Visitors should be prepared for typical Southeast Alaska conditions and practice bear safety, as this is bear country in the Tongass National Forest.
