About this campground

Saddle Creek Campground sits on the rim of Hells Canyon along the Hat Point Road in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, offering one of the most remote tent camping experiences in northeastern Oregon. The campground features 7 walk-in tent-only sites that provide stunning vistas across North America's deepest river gorge to the Seven Devils Mountains in Idaho. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit, and vault toilets are available, though campers must bring all their own water as none is available on-site. The surrounding landscape bears the marks of past wildfires, resulting in limited shade and sparse tree coverage near the campsites.

This open terrain, however, maximizes the dramatic canyon views. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the rim trails and experiencing the rugged beauty of Hells Canyon. Access to Saddle Creek requires careful navigation of Forest Road 2640 (Hat Point Road), a very steep, narrow, winding gravel road that climbs approximately 18 miles from Imnaha. The road is not suitable for RVs or trailers, and low-clearance vehicles should exercise caution. The road can become slippery when wet or frozen and is particularly hazardous in late fall and winter. This remote location and challenging access contribute to the campground's light usage and wilderness character.
