About this campground
South Maxwell Snow Shelter is a winter backcountry shelter located in the Santiam Pass area of Willamette National Forest, one of the newest in the region, built in 2010 by volunteers from the Willamette Chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club. The shelter is accessed from Maxwell Sno-Park by skiing or snowshoeing through trail intersections #1 or #7. The shelter is a three-sided structure with no door, featuring a wood stove for heat, a gravel floor, and capacity for up to 4 people overnight. It is available for both day use and overnight stays on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge.

The shelter provides a rustic winter camping experience in the Cascade Range with access to an extensive network of winter trails. Maxwell Sno-Park, located 3.5 miles west of Santiam Junction on Highway 22, offers 25 miles of trails ranging from easy to difficult. A Sno-Park permit is required for parking from November 1 through April 30. Visitors should come prepared with winter backcountry gear, as there are no restrooms or drinking water available at the shelter.
