About this campground
Mountain View Snow Shelter is a fully enclosed winter shelter located in the Willamette National Forest, accessible from Maxwell Sno-Park via snowshoe or cross-country ski trails. Part of the Santiam Pass winter recreation area, the shelter sits at approximately 4,355 feet elevation and offers panoramic views of Three Fingered Jack, Mount Washington, and other Cascade peaks on clear days. The shelter accommodates up to 15 people overnight and is available for both day use and overnight stays during the winter season. Access requires skiing or snowshoeing approximately 3.8 miles round trip with 700 feet of elevation gain from Maxwell Sno-Park.

The shelter is maintained by dedicated volunteers and features basic winter camping amenities. A Sno-Park permit is required for parking at Maxwell Sno-Park. Overnight visitors should plan to use the Maxwell Sno-Park parking area rather than Big Meadows, as vehicles at Big Meadows risk being plowed in during heavy snowfall. The shelter provides a backcountry winter camping experience in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness area, with access to 25 miles of winter trails ranging from easy to difficult terrain.
