About this campground

Morris Hill Group Campground offers a peaceful, rustic setting for groups of family and friends on a ridge above Lake Moomaw's southern end in George Washington National Forest. The campground provides scenic views of the 2,530-acre cold-water lake formed by the Jackson River. Each group site accommodates up to 25 guests with space for eight tents and includes two fully accessible vault toilets, picnic tables, and a group grill. No water or electricity is available at the group sites. The convenient location places campers just a half-mile from Lake Moomaw's inviting sandy swim beach at Coles Point.

A fishing pier offers opportunities to catch brown and rainbow trout, bass, and crappie, while Back Creek provides additional trout fishing. Coles Point Boat Ramp is less than two miles from the campground. Hikers can explore the Morris Hill Bike Trail and Fortney Loop Trail. The Jackson River downstream offers fly fishing, canoeing, rafting, and kayaking. The campground sits within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, which protect 40 species of trees in mostly Appalachian hardwood and mixed pine-hardwood forests, 60 species of mammals, and 200 species of birds. Hot Springs, Virginia, a quaint rural resort town, is located about 30 minutes east of the lake.
