About this campground
Magpie Campground offers a peaceful, primitive camping experience in the Little Missouri National Grassland, about 40 miles northwest of Belfield. The campground is nestled in a shaded, wooded area surrounded by buttes and badlands, providing abundant privacy and a true sense of remoteness. It features 8 single-unit campsites, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and parking pad. An accessible vault toilet serves the campground, and potable water is available via hand pump from spring through fall. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding badlands and is a popular assembly point for those traveling to Devil's Pass for panoramic views.

The Ice Caves are just a short hike away. A trailhead for the Maah Daah Hey Trail is located half a mile south of the campground along the main road, offering access to miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities. Note that all motorized vehicles, including e-bikes, are prohibited on trails. This is a pack-in, pack-out facility with no electrical hookups or trash service. Access requires a 15-mile drive on gravel Road 712 (Magpie Road), making it ideal for campers seeking solitude and a remote camping experience. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis year-round, with limited services outside the Memorial Day to Labor Day season.
