About this campground
Lake Guerin Shelter is a historic three-sided Adirondack-style shelter constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933-1937 as part of the Cross Admiralty Island Canoe Route system. The 12' x 10' shelter features a peeled log superstructure with shake walls and roof, and a dirt floor. Positioned on the west end of Lake Guerin in the heart of Admiralty Island National Monument, the shelter provides basic protection from the elements for paddlers and backcountry travelers. The shelter is typically accessed by canoe or kayak via portage from either Distin Lake or Hasselborg Lake. A skiff from the nearby Sportsmen cabin is also available.

For those flying in, the site is approximately 40 minutes by floatplane from Juneau. Paddlers traveling the full canoe route will find this shelter about 8 miles from Mitchell Bay. The surrounding wilderness offers opportunities for wildlife viewing in one of Alaska's most pristine habitats, known for its high density of brown bears. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient and practice rigorous bear safety protocols.
