About this campground
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at James River State Park, Horseshoe Campground caters specifically to equestrian campers. The facility offers 9 pull-through sites designed to accommodate trailers up to 40 feet in length, with the unique feature of allowing two trailers to share a common area between them. Each site includes water and electric hookups with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp outlets, a fire-ring grill, picnic table, and lantern hanger. The campground provides 20 covered horse stalls where horses must be kept overnight, and campers can purchase pine shaving bedding at the contact station or visitor center. Rakes and wheelbarrows are available on-site.

The campground includes a full-service bathhouse with four unisex hot showers, one of which is wheelchair-accessible. A dump station is available free to overnight guests. From the campground, riders have access to 22 miles of multi-use trails for bridle use, though horses are not permitted to access the river. The park operates as a trash-in, trash-out facility to minimize debris and wildlife impact. State law requires visitors to carry a copy of a current negative Coggins report for each horse brought to the park.
