Upon arrival, you will go straight to the camp. There will be a lockbox on the gate with keys for the Gate, Bathhouse, and two for the Big house (one for the front door, and one for the porch door). The code is 2004. Please close and lock the gate when you leave and lock the keys back in the lock box. The Big house is a work in progress, but you are welcome to use it! There is a working stove/oven, in case you want to use that for cooking. Remember: You will need to bring your own drinking/cooking water. (The well water is not currently filtered or treated for drinking.) Fires are not permitted during Fire Bans. Please reference the NC DEQ website for updates on fire bans. https://deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/air-quality/air-quality-compliance/open-burning You can purchase approved (local) firewood at the Big Creek Country Store 24/7 via cash or check (honor system). You will pass the country store if you come in from the interstate, it is about 3 miles from the camp (67 Mount Sterling Rd). At the end of your stay, please remember to extinguish the fire and remove all trash from the premises and trash cans. Lastly, this is a remote camping area, so it is possible that you may encounter wildlife during your stay. Common wildlife in the area includes, but is not limited to: black bears, elk, raccoons, snakes, spiders, bees, etc. Please contain your trash and do not feed animals. It is your responsibility to exercise caution and properly educate yourself for wilderness safety. Cell service is spotty, so please be sure to download directions prior to your trip. We hope you have a wonderful stay and enjoy the beauty of the Western North Carolina Mountains! Directions to the camp from Interstate 40 (actual waypoint is: 35.74432, -83.08166): Cell service is spotty, so please be sure to download directions prior to your trip. The camp is located in North Carolina, but is accessed off the Waterville, TN exit (exit 451) on 1-40. (alternate gravel routes can be suggested, just ask!) 1. Coming from North Carolina, you will turn left off the interstate to cross the Pigeon River on Waterville Rd. From Tennessee, you will turn right off the interstate to cross the Pigeon River on Waterville Rd. 2. Follow Waterville Rd along the river and pass the Walters Hydroelectric plant on your left (you will cross a one lane bridge) and follow to the 4 way stop. 3. Turn left onto Mt. Sterling Rd and pass the Big Creek Country Store. Follow this road and it will turn to gravel. 4. You will pass a field with bees and cows on your right and the house on the left has a shipping container. 4. Continue to the top of the hill and take the first road on the left that drops down into the forest. This is unmarked Forest Service Road 288 (Flat Branch Road) - if you get to Enchanted Dr, you just missed the turn. 5. Follow Flat Branch Road through a creek crossing and continue until you reach a fork in the road. Take the middle road. Follow this along the power lines. 6. The camp is the first driveway on the left (power lines will be to your right). You will see reflectors marking the stream by the driveway, and the driveway goes up the hill. Follow the driveway up to the gate. The address is 780 Flat Branch Road. Please do NOT google this address as it will send you to the wrong location. The actual waypoint is: 35.74432, -83.08166.
