About this campground

Alvarado Campground is positioned at 9,000 feet elevation on the slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains within San Isabel National Forest, surrounded by ponderosa pine, aspen, lodgepole pine, and gambel oak. The campground provides a variety of site types including reservable sites, equestrian facilities, and first-come first-served options, accommodating tent campers, RVs, and horse camping. The campground serves as a prime basecamp for accessing the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, which spans 226,455 acres with 60 alpine lakes, 400 miles of streams, and over 400 miles of trails.

The motorized Rainbow Trail runs along the base of the wilderness and is open to ATVs and motorcycles, while nonmotorized trails including Cottonwood, Comanche, Venable, and Goodwin climb from the Rainbow Trail into wilderness areas where only foot and livestock travel is permitted. Some campsites offer views of the Wet Mountain Valley, while others sit beside Alvarado Creek. The large aspen stands visible throughout the area are remnants of fires set in the early 1900s to clear pasture land, expose minerals, and produce charcoal. The campground is located within the Pike-San Isabel National Forests, which encompass over a million acres including more than half of Colorado's peaks above 14,000 feet.
