About this campground

Shiefer Campground is a remote, undeveloped camping area situated on the Salmon River with panoramic views of the South Fork canyon country. At 3,050 feet elevation, this primitive site offers a true backcountry experience for campers seeking solitude and natural beauty. The campground serves as a gateway to adventure, with trails leading directly into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness for extended wilderness exploration. A shorter trail provides access to Pilot Peak lookout for those seeking spectacular vistas.

The remote location requires planning, as the drive from McCall takes 2-3 hours via Warren Wagon Road (Forest Road 21) and Forest Road 340, passing through the historic mining towns of Secesh and Warren. Due to its undeveloped nature and remote location, the campground is not serviced regularly. Campers must be completely self-sufficient, treating or filtering water from nearby sources and packing out all trash. The lack of amenities and difficult access make this an ideal destination for experienced campers comfortable with primitive conditions who value remoteness and natural surroundings over modern conveniences.
