About this campground

Named for the skeletal ruins of an old stone church nearby, Stone Church Horse Campground is a dedicated equestrian facility in the Athens Unit of Wayne National Forest. The campground features 10 well-equipped sites, each with a 45-foot by 15-foot parking space, covered paddock for horses, fire pit, grill, and tent pad. Two sites are fully accessible for people with disabilities. The Stone Church Horse Trail System offers 21 miles of scenic riding trails that wind through the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio's hardwood forests. Various loops allow riders to customize their distance and experience.

The trails pass through diverse vegetation including open fields, brushland, mature forest, and regenerating woodland, offering opportunities to observe wildlife and evidence of past human activity and current land management practices. The campground is designed specifically for horse camping, with stock water available but no potable water on-site. Vault toilets serve the campground. The facility operates seasonally, with horse trails closed during winter and early spring months to protect trail conditions. Hikers can access the trails year-round even when closed to equestrian use.
