About this campground

Wurtz Cabin is a historic two-story log cabin located just south of the Canadian border along the North Fork Road near the North Fork of the Flathead River. Listed on the National Historic Register, this fully accessible rental cabin was originally built by Frank and Ella Wurtz in 1913 and served as their family homestead through the 1960s. Volunteers helped the Forest Service restore the structure to its current condition. The rustic cabin accommodates up to 12 guests with two double beds on the main floor, a bunk bed, and twin beds in the loft. Amenities include a propane cook stove, propane lights, propane heater, wood stove, and basic cooking and eating utensils.

A covered front porch overlooks a flat grassy lawn with views of pine trees and the snow-capped Livingston Range in Glacier National Park. An outdoor vault toilet is provided. No electricity or drinking water is available, and guests must bring their own water, food, bedding, flashlights, and garbage bags for pack-it-in, pack-it-out service. The cabin provides excellent access to outdoor recreation year-round, including wildlife viewing, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing in the nearby Flathead River, plus hiking trails through the surrounding forest. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Glacier National Park is accessible at Polebridge to the south. The North Fork Road is gravel and only intermittently plowed in winter, requiring four-wheel drive and chains. Grizzly bears frequent the area. Pets, tents, RVs, and commercial use are prohibited. Maximum stay is 3 consecutive nights with 7 total days per calendar year.
