About this campground

Chilao Campground sits at an elevation of 5,300 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains, giving campers majestic panoramas of nearby Vetter Lookout and Big Tujunga Canyon. The campground offers 84 campsites spread across two loops: Little Pines and Manzanita. Each loop offers 40+ sites for tent camping. Little Pines Loop is open year-round dependent on winter and road conditions, while Manzanita Loop serves as overflow during peak seasons and closes for winter starting in mid-November. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Wildlife is very active in this area, and campers must secure their food when sites are unattended.

Bears are common, and proper food storage in vehicles or bear-proof containers is essential. Other wildlife includes bobcats, coyotes, mule deer, and mountain lions. The campground provides access to the Silver Moccasin Trail and is located about an hour and a half from downtown Los Angeles via Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2), making it a popular weekend getaway for Angelenos seeking forest camping close to the city.
