About this campground

Brown Mountain Campground offers a remote camping experience in the Shoshone National Forest's Wood River area, approximately 3 miles west of the national forest boundary. This small campground features seven sites nestled along the beautiful Wood River, providing an ideal base for anglers, hikers, and those seeking solitude in Wyoming's backcountry. The campground maintains a primitive character with basic amenities including vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Bear boxes are provided for required food storage, as this is active bear country.

Campers must be self-sufficient, bringing all necessary water and packing out all trash, as no potable water or garbage collection services are available. Most sites accommodate RVs or trailers up to 16 feet, though one site can handle up to 40 feet. Beyond the campground, adventurers can explore the historic mining ghost town of Kirwin, located 9 miles upriver on a challenging road that requires high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The area offers excellent opportunities for fishing the Wood River, wildlife viewing, day hikes, and backpacking. With no cell service and limited development, Brown Mountain Campground provides an authentic backcountry experience for those prepared for primitive conditions.
