Rough Rider State Park serves as a gateway to outdoor adventure, with direct access to the 144-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail system popular for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. The Little Missouri River, North Dakota's only State Scenic River, provides opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, especially in early spring. The park caters to various camping preferences with modern sites offering electricity and water hookups, dedicated equestrian sites with corral access, and primitive camping options. The park was formerly known as Sully Creek State Park and was renamed to honor Theodore Roosevelt and the legendary Rough Riders. Facilities include a shower house, vault toilets, water hydrants, a dump station, and a round pen for equestrian users. The campground's location in the badlands offers scenic views of colorful bluffs and unique geological formations.
