Located 24 miles northeast of Wilsall in the scenic Shields River drainage of the West Crazy Mountains, Shields River Campground provides a remote camping experience on the Yellowstone District of Custer Gallatin National Forest. This primitive campground features 6 first-come, first-served campsites at no charge, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious campers seeking solitude. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash services, and no potable water is available on-site. Vault toilets are provided for visitor convenience. The road can be challenging when wet, and visitors should call the ranger district for current road conditions before traveling.
