About this campground

Gold Lake Sno Shelter has been a beloved winter skiing destination since the 1960s, offering backcountry enthusiasts a rustic retreat in the Willamette Pass area. Located at the outlet of Gold Lake at 5,800 feet elevation, this historic three-sided shelter was designed by William Parke, the Willamette National Forest's first Recreation Planner, and constructed with Civilian Conservation Corps labor during the early 1940s. The shelter is accessed via an approximately 2.3-mile easy road ski from Gold Lake Sno-Park, following the snow-covered Gold Lake Road through large trees with mostly level terrain.

Inside, visitors find a wood stove for warmth, a sleeping bench, wood picnic table, and gravel floor. The shelter accommodates up to four people for overnight stays and is available free of charge. This shelter serves as an excellent destination for beginner to intermediate Nordic skiers looking for a manageable winter outing. The nearby frozen expanse of Gold Lake provides scenic views, though skiers should exercise extreme caution near the lake as winters are rarely cold enough to completely freeze it safely. Vault toilets are available, but visitors must bring all drinking water and be prepared for winter backcountry conditions.
