Have a look at a selection of our local visitor activities… Dark Skies & Stargazing: We are fortunate to be in a wonderful area for stargazing, all thanks to our village's enlightened view on light pollution (no street lights!). You don't have to be an expert astronomer to appreciate the celestial show on offer for free here – just pack your tent and some warm clothes to enjoy the magical natural illumination from the night sky. A Unihedron 'Sky Quality Meter' gave readings on a moonless June evening just before midnight of between 20.50 and 21.00. Please see www.darkskysociety.org .We are also privileged to be just a 30 minute drive from the Observatory Science Centre located at Herstmonceux Castle in Hailsham that provides spectacular hands-on science and discovery among the domes and telescopes of this world famous astronomical observatory. Wine-tasting: A classic example of a fantastic English wine producer, the family-run Carr Taylor Vineyard is literally just down the road from us and offers individual self-guided tours for just £1.50 per person. Open every day except Christmas to New Year from 10.00 until 17.00. No need to book in advance and dogs are welcome. Tours cost £10.00 per person (discounts for groups) and include a guided tour round the vineyard, a visit to the winery and the bottling roomfollowed by a tutored wine tasting (selected dates, pre-booking essential). Kite-surfing: Thrill-seekers need look no further than the Kite-Surf Centre, just 12 miles down the road in Camber, offering lessons in kite-surfing, kite-boarding, power-kiting, kite-buggying, kite-landboarding and stand up paddle boarding. A one-day kite-surfing taster course is just £99 and for that you get five hours of tuition in the exhilarating sport and a BKSA/IKO certificate. For more info go to: www.thekitesurfcentre.com . Fishing: Peaceful fly-fishing is to be found on the Powdermill Reservoir just up the road from us through the Hastings Fly Fishers Club. You do need a fishing license and day permits are available at £25 for a day ticket and £12 for boat hire. More information can be found on the website www.hastingsflyfishers.co.uk. Vic Partridge, the Bailiff for the club, is available for any advice or information between 9.30-10.30am daily on 01424 870498.See Steam in Action: Just ten minutes walk from Dogwood Cottage Campsite is the extraordinary Giants of Brede exhibition – a collection of Victorian and Edwardian steam pumping engines. A free attraction, The Giants of Brede is open on the first Saturday of every month 10am-4pm and Bank Holiday Mondays. This heritage site, which includes refreshments, sales and souvenir items, is run and maintained by volunteers from the Brede Steam Engine Society, a dedicated and knowledgeable group who welcome the opportunity of sharing their passion with all-comers, young and old. Take a Stroll: You can walk out of the campsite straight into beautiful rambling countryside or opt for a stunning woodland stroll in Brede High Woods. Two car parks can be found just up the road from us on the B2089 on the way to Battle, and there are well sign-posted short and long walks round this ancient woodland, special for its rare green hellebores and wild service trees, but also for hobby, woodcock, nightingales and buzzards, glowworms, great crested newts, lampreys, dormouse, badgers and fallow deer. Ride the Railways: The Kent & East Sussex Railway is the country's finest example of a rural light railway. The line gently wends its way from for ten and a half miles, through the unspoilt countryside of the Rother Valley, to terminate in the shadow of the magnificent National Trust castle at Bodiam. The all day hop-on, hop-off Rover fares allows unlimited travel along the full length of the railway and costs £15 per adult. Car parks can be found at Northiam, Tentenden and Bodiam.
