About this campground

### **Location and Access** **Peterson Lake Cabin** is located in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. It is situated on the north shore of Peterson Lake, approximately 4 miles northeast of Juneau. Access to the cabin is by float plane or by a trail that begins at the end of Glacier Highway. The trail to Peterson Lake Cabin is about 4.5 miles and can be challenging, with an elevation gain of about 850 feet, so it's important to be prepared for a strenuous hike.

### **Cabin Details** The cabin is typically a traditional A-frame forest service cabin, with wooden construction, and comes equipped with: - Bunks (without mattresses) - A table and benches - A wood stove (for heat) - An outside toilet (often a pit or vault toilet) - A rowboat with oars (lifejackets not provided) Do note that there is no electricity or running water at the cabin. Water can be taken from the lake or streams, but it should be treated before use. ### **Capacity and Reservations** The cabin usually can accommodate up to 6 to 8 people. Reservations are required and can be made through the National Recreation Reservation System. It's recommended that you book well in advance, especially for the summer months, as this is a popular destination. ### **What to Bring** Campers should be self-sufficient and pack in all necessary supplies, including: - Sleeping bags and pads - Cooking stove and fuel - Cooking utensils - Food and water (and means to treat water) - Lanterns or flashlights (with extra batteries) - Firestarter and matches (in a waterproof container) - First aid kit - Clothing and gear suited to the weather ### **Activities** Peterson Lake provides opportunities for various outdoor activities, such as: - Hiking - Fishing - Boating - Wildlife viewing - Berry picking (in season) Fishing can be good for cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and Kokanee salmon, but you'll need an Alaska state fishing license. ### **Wildlife and Safety** The area is a habitat for black bears, so proper food storage and bear safety practices are essential. Store food in bear-proof canisters or in the cabin, keep a clean camp, and never feed wildlife. ### **Other Considerations** - Visitors must pack out what they pack in, as there are no trash collection services. - Weather in Southeast Alaska is unpredictable; rain is common and can be heavy, so be prepared with appropriate rain gear and layers. - Be aware of and prepared for mosquitoes and biting insects, particularly during the summer. ### **Booking and More Information** To book Peterson Lake Cabin or for more up-to-date information, you should contact the Tongass National Forest service or visit the U.S. Forest Service website. Ensure you check the latest information on cabin conditions, trail status, and any local advisories before your trip.
