If you like the sound of a quiet getaway on a small, back-to-nature campsite, but rather fancy some amenities so you don’t have to rough it too much, then take a look at Bilberry Boreen Campsite, 10 minutes’ drive from Inchigeelagh. Here you can choose your own pitch among wildflower meadows and woodland on a farm that is in the process of being re-wilded. There are spectacular rural views everywhere you look, and the peaceful vibe has an emphasis firmly on appreciation of the wildlife around you. Now back to those amenities… and there are quite a few.

Tucked away in the corner of a meadow is a shower block, plus a shared kitchen with all basics like cooking oils, herbs, tea, coffee and sugar – in short pretty much everything you need for the basics of cooking a meal or making a brew. A covered area with a barbecue and pizza oven is a few steps away, with a picnic table just outside so you can serve your meals with a view. Should the weather play nasty, you can retreat to the comfy sofas in the communal living area, where you can borrow books and games to keep all ages entertained. There are electricity sockets there for charging your devices, but otherwise – this being ‘almost’ wild camping – everything is off grid.
