About this campground
Accessible only by boat, Backcountry Hells Bay Chickee sits on an elevated platform in the mangrove waters of Everglades National Park. The chickee features two designated camping spots on a composite deck structure, with campers reaching the site via a 3-4 hour paddle along the marked Hells Bay Canoe Trail from the mainland trailhead. The platform itself shows its age compared to newer chickees in the park system, with melted spots on the floorboards from camping stoves and an angled boardwalk that provides some separation between the two camping areas. The structure lacks ladders found on newer installations, which can make boarding challenging during low tide periods.

Wildlife sightings vary considerably, with some campers reporting dolphins near the platform and sharks along the paddle route, while others see primarily birds and fish. Mosquitoes intensify dramatically after sunset, though strong winds can provide relief. [Liz M.](https://thedyrt.com/camping/florida/hells-bay-chickee/reviews/95745) notes the importance of securing watercraft properly, as "winds can change drastically and quickly." The portable toilet remains functional and clean, though it requires a makeshift string closure. Spider webs often block the trail for early-morning paddlers. Other backcountry chickees include [Backcountry Pearl Bay Chickee — Everglades National Park](https://thedyrt.com/camping/florida/pearl-bay-chickee) and [Lard Can Wilderness Campground — Everglades National Park](https://thedyrt.com/camping/florida/lard-can) within paddling distance. Reserve well in advance during peak season months.

Reviews
Overall, the campsite offers a pleasant experience for campers, particularly those interested in paddling. Reviewers appreciate the beautiful views, well-marked trails, and the stability of the chickees. However, some concerns were raised about the comfort of the new platforms, proximity of sites, and issues with the porta-potty. Additionally, campers should be prepared for mosquitoes in the evenings. Despite these drawbacks, the site remains a popular choice for its scenic beauty and supportive staff.
