I never dreamed I could be camping at the base of such a beautiful mountain. We missed the small sign at first coming in but found spot number 1 to be perfect for our rooftop tent. Be careful in sandals or barefoot there are lots of cacti. The area was so peaceful. Also if you don’t feel like cooking head over to fort garland to the Mountain View cafe. Amazing! The sites were quite close to each other and the highway sounds. Cacti everywhere which is common in high desert. The view is absolutely amazing and you just can’t beat it! We stayed for 4 nights in a tent here.. we just did not realize how windy it would be!! We had some trouble blocking the wind and getting shade.. also, the place just had one table at one site and the other two were pretty bare. And you have to watch out for all the cactus.. I swear there were a billion out there. The place could be kept up with a little better.. we did find a dead rat on the table when we got to the site and the sites themselves could be cleaned up a little bit to be a bit more comfortable for campers. There is absolutely NO shade during the day so just keep that in mind and the strong winds and the cactus.. but it really was a beautiful place and we really enjoyed ourselves!
