Ben and Caroline welcome you to St Martin's campsite website\. Whether you're considering your first camping holiday on St Martin's, or you're one of our regulars just keeping in touch, we hope you'll enjoy having a look around these pages\.First time visitorsIf you're looking for a truly "get away from it all" sort of holiday, this is the place to come\.Nestling between the pittosporum hedges, and only yards away from the soft silver sands on what many people believe is the most beautiful island of the five inhabited islands, come and stay on the only 4 Star campsite in the Islands and enjoy our gentle pace of life, mild climate and stunning beaches\. St\. Martin's is a fabulous place for children; they can safely enjoy a level of freedom and independence which sadly is no longer possible in most places on the mainland\.Our campsite is a wonderful base for those who enjoy walking, water sports, playing tennis, clay pigeon shooting, swimming with the seals or more relaxing pastimes such as bird watching, following the gig races, watching the inter island cricket, cowrie hunting or visiting the other islands with their spectacular views, wild flowers and ancient burial sites\.Or simply take off your watch, put your car keys in a case, turn off your mobile and just become a human being again and potter\. If you really do need to keep in touch we do provide wireless broadband access and facilities to charge mobiles, laptops etc\.The campsiteSt\.Martin's Campsite \(the only campsite in Scilly with an English Tourist Board 4 Star rating\) nestles in a sun trap behind the sand dune belt of Middletown, literally yards from the 'Campsite beach' with its tropical soft silver sand, crystal clear waters, panoramic views of the numerous islands, ending with a grand finale of magnificent sun sets and uninterrupted views of the 'Milky Way'\.The site comprises of one large and two smaller fields, which are sheltered by evergreen hedges , a legacey of the days when these fields were part of the flower industry, of which Scilly is so famous\. We are the second largest campsite on Scilly and are restricted to 50 pitches/100 people, due to this there is always a great feeling of space\.Please note that although we do not allow dogs to stay on the campsite, they may be present at times, especially our collie 'Nettle'\.Our seasonWe are open from 16 March until 5 October\. Booking is essential for Whitsun week, and for the last two weeks of June through to the end of August\. You don't always need to book for any other weeks during our season,\(ie\. when it's £9\.50 pppn\), but please phone first to check availabitity and to let us know of your pending arrival\. See our Bookings page for further information\.FacilitiesThe site has a superb modern facilities building \(built with the aid of an ETB grant\) which comprises:\- eight toilets\- eight hot and cold water wash basins\- four coin\-operated showers \(£1\.00\)\- two coin\-operated hair\-dryers\- baby\-changing facilities\- two external sinks for washing\-up\.There is also a separate laundry, with two industrial strength washing machines, a tumble dryer, a spin\-dryer, two sinks for hand\-washing and an iron/ironing board\. The washing machines and the tumble dryer use tokens which are available from Ben and Caroline at their house in Middletown\. The spin\-dryer is coin\-operated \(50p\) as is the iron \(20p\)\.Please note that although dogs are not allowed to stay on the campsite, they may be present at times, especially our collie "Nettle"\.WaterAll our water is sourced from our own bore\-hole, so it is clear, cold and chemical free\. It is filtered and passed through a ultra violet light, and is regularly checked by the local authority to ensure it meets the required standards\. There are 3 stand\-pipes on the campsite which provide drinking water, and buckets may be filled at the facilities or laundry to take back to your tent\.The BarnEggs, milk \(uht\) and seasonal vegetables are generally available\.Charging Mobile 'phones, cameras, torches etc can be charged up in the tractor barn adjacent to the road in Middletown\. This facility is provided at your own risk and is free of charge, though we would appreciate your donation to the RNLI using the collection box provided\.Freezer PacksThere are 2 freezers for campers' ice\-packs: please make sure your ice\-packs are labelled with your name\. There is a small charge of 50p per ice pack per week\.Gas Cylindersare available for hire or exchange in the following sizes:Calor Gas \(butane\) 4\.5kg; 7kg; 13kgCamping Gaz 901; 904, 907We also have for sale a large range of disposable gas canisters, paraffin, methylated spirits and disposable barbeques\.Camping equipmentWe do not hire equipment, though we do carry a good variety of small spares e\.g\. pegs, rubber rings, Duck tape etc\.St Martin'sSt Martin's is about two miles long and three\-quarters of a mile wide at its broadest point, which makes it \(at 222 hectares\) the third largest island after St Mary's and Tresco\. It lies at the north\-eastern corner of the group and gives visitors to the Islands their first glimpse of Scilly as they approach from the mainland\.An island of contrastsA granite ridge runs along the spine of the island which lays roughly east to west\. The area to the north of this is fairly rugged, characterised by beautiful heathland of purple heather and golden gorse terminating in rugged cliffs\.The area to the south of the granite ridge has much softer contours and is cultivated in small, narrow fields which lead down to white sandy beaches\. It is on this part of the island that three clusters of habitation accommodate the island population of about one hundred people\. Higher Town, Middletown and Lowertown are joined by a single narrow road which runs from Highertown Quay to Lowertown Quay\.The pattern of bulb fields and enclosed hilltops has gradually become obscured as land has fallen out of cultivation, though the island boasts a thriving flower farm in Highertown, and numerous small fields are gradually being reclaimed by grazing stock, or for the production of vegetables\.Beautiful beachesSt Martin's is renowned for its tranquility and beautiful beaches \- you can always find a glorious sheltered beach whatever the wind direction and, even at the height of summer, be its only occupants\. The sea around is a wonderfully clear \- there are no rivers to muddy the waters \- but its tropical blue appearance belies the fact that it's usually a couple of degrees cooler than the waters of mainland Cornwall\. Most refreshing on a hot summer day\!DirectionsBy SeaIt is not possible for visitors to bring cars or campervans to any part of the Isles of Scilly\.Scillonian III The passenger ferry operates between Penzance and St Mary's\. The trip takes approx 2 hrs 40 minutes\.Transport of camping luggageThe Steamship Company dockers arrive from 7\.30 a\.m: drive onto the quay at Penzance \(well signposted\) and you will be told where to take your luggage for loading into the appropriate off\-island container\. Make sure all your packages are secure, weigh no more than 15kg \(40lbs\) each and are clearly labelled for St Martins Campsite, and have a red St\. Martins label \(available on the quay\)\.Camping TrailersThese need to be booked onto the Scillonian\. At St Mary's, they are transferred to the inter\-island freight launch, "Lyonesse Lady"\. We will meet the boat and tow your trailer to the campsite\.
