> Human version: http://ssr-app-zpimxgrglq-uc.a.run.app/listings/campgrounds/penpont-camping-brecon-powys

This privately owned Grade I listed house has been home to the same family since it was first built in about 1666\. In 1992 Gavin and Davina Hogg, with their two sons, moved in and opened up the house and grounds for the first time in its history\.Magnificent in its grounds and on the banks of the River Usk, Penpont lies in the middle of a 2000 acre working rural estate\. The house is the centre piece of a remarkable group of buildings spanning various periods, including a church, Dower house, stables, workshops, a dovecote on stilts and a 19 century conservatory\.Around the house lies extensive grounds, sweeping lawns, the old Victorian rose and walled gardens, riverside and woodland walks and more recently constructed the Green Man Maze\.Time has stood still at Penpont for much of the last century\. This has contributed greatly to the unspoilt charm and tranquility which characterise the house and grounds\. However, over the last 20 years a challenging yet sympathetic restoration programme has been undertaken\.CAMPINGCamping is how it should be at Penpont\! The site, the old Rose Garden, has an informal layout – no lines of designated pitches but a variety of small private spaces in amongst the mature trees and shrubs with a central open communal space\. From May onwards we erect a large white funky awning, in the Rose Garden's open space, which provides great shelter to gather under should the weather not be so kind\! Alternatively there are some riverside pitches and if you're lucky you'll see the otters, the kingfishers, the dippers and other wildlife\. There are a couple of deep swimming pools in the river but do bring some old trainers to paddle and swim in\. Penpont has the fishing rights to about a mile, both banks, of the River Usk\. We stipulate fly only and catch & release\. We charge £20 per rod per day\. There are a couple of permanent communal fire places and we have several metal raised fire pits which can be used by our campers and placed anywhere\. We sell seasoned bags of logs at £5/bag – gather your own kindling and bring some old newspaper & matches\. We also sell our own charcoal in the farm shop alongside our fresh produce from the walled gardens\. There is also a freezer full of delicious local organic meat and eggs too\. The hot showers and loos are located within the Stable Block which is a short walk away from the camp\-site\. There is also a washing up sink and drainer and a stand pipe for fresh water\. Recycle, recycle, recycle: We put clearly marked bins out for people to use and welcome people's careful sorting of their rubbish\! It is very necessary to book beforehand\.PLEASE NOTE: This year we are having a no car policy on the camp site\. Wheel barrows are provided to help you cart your gear\. A car park is provided close by in the orchard\.GARDENS & GROUNDSThe gardens around the house are extensive, 45 acres, and include a wide range of habitats, from lawns to woodlands, ornamental to wild areas\. The adjacent landscape and garden is listed as Grade 2\*\. The gardens are bisected by the River Usk which forms a natural divide from the south and north garden, and as it flows through it creates its own habitats of natural beauty\.The earliest recording of the garden is a map from 1738, showing a formal garden with clipped Yew hedges extending to the east of the house\. In the mid 1700's the garden was redesigned, influenced by the pastoral designs of Repton and Brown, and it is this base of the landscape that still survives today\.FARM SHOPFresh organic fruit, vegetables, and flowers grown in the walled gardens will be for sale in our farm shop\. The shop is open from mid June through to Christmas every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30am \- 6:00pm\.We also stock frozen organic meat and fresh eggs from Aberorganics\. Estate charcoal sold in 1\.5kg bags\. The charcoal is made from our woodlands using waste timber and comes from a sustainable resource\.Greenwood crafts, such as chairs, stools, bowls, spatulas, honey dippers and babies rattles, all made locally, by Gareth Irwin\. Gareth runs a business called Penpont Greenwood, based here in the woodlands on the Estate\.ACTIVITIESFISHINGThe River Usk, one of the largest rivers in Wales\. Penpont has the fishing rights to a mile of the river\. We let a limited number of rods per day and stipulate fly only, and catch and release\. The river is naturally stocked with wild Brown Trout, famous for its spring rise, and given good autumn rainfall salmon can be caught at the tail end of the season\. Tickets are £20\.00 per day\.A guiding service can be arranged please contact Kim Tribe via his website\. Other beats in the area can be booked through\- www\.wyeuskfoundation\.orgWe feature in the Wye and Usk Passport booklet, \-entry No B63 Tickets can be booked through their website, see link above, or direct with the Estate office\.While Usk, as ever it runs murmuring by, In that sweet concert seems to bear a part, till dreamy softness steals upon the heartof charmed angler idly sauntering nigh' \-\-John Lloyd 1847\. RIVER SWIMMINGWe have a suitable swimming hole just beneath the bridge, with a small pebble beach\. Being only about 15 miles from the source, the water always guarantees a refreshing dip for those hearty enough to take the plunge\. It is advisable to swim in old trainers\. TENNISThere is an All Weather Tennis Court, across the river, which beckons the more energetic to enjoy the peaceful surroundings for a ‘knock about' or serious game\! Remember to bring your rackets, balls and trainers with you\. We also have a table tennis table in the self catering wing\. CROQUETThe large flat lawn to the front of the main house is perfect for croquet, knocking a football about, or throwing a Frisbee\. BUSHCRAFT A recent development has been the use of Penpont woodland areas by Bush craft companies for team building events, be it for corporate or private markets\.OUR AREABrecon Beacons National ParkFor people visiting the national park there is an enormously diverse landscape to explore from mountains and moorlands to the flat pastoral land and steeply wooded river valleys\.
