Have you ever seen a picture of a glacier lake nestled into the base of a towering mountain and thought, “Wow, where is that and how can I get there?”, only to find out that beautiful spot is in the middle of nowhere? British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest is wild, vast and largely untouched and many of these remote places can only be accessed by rough 4×4 roads. If you’ve ever wanted to get into the backcountry of BC, but lack the equipment to do it, consider renting an overland vehicle.

What is Overlanding?

Overland vehicles offer an alternative approach to travelling. They provide freedom, a different perspective and the comfort and confidence to take your weekend getaway or summer road trip to the next level. Take the road less travelled through the small town you might have skipped or the “short cut” through the mountain pass instead of the highway. Having the right equipment that allows you to take the scenic route offers the opportunity to reach parts of the province that are less frequently visited and stunningly beautiful.

Simply put, overlanding is road tripping! However, the difference between our average road trip and overlanding is the emphasis on self-reliance. True overlanding means bringing everything you need to set up camp. This gives you the freedom to choose your own adventure, explore as you go and set up camp in a beautiful spots without all the bells and whistles. The journey and the adventure is the point: why stick to highways where there is a network of 60,000km of backroads to take instead?

Overlanding with Pacific Backroader

Pacific Backroader provides custom built overland vehicles equipped with all the camping necessities to get off the grid in style and comfort. Each vehicle comes with a roof top tent that comfortably sleeps two to three people on a 3” foam mattress. The tent is fixed to the roof of the vehicle and can be set up within a few minutes, as well as an awning to give you shelter at your campsite. Cooking at some campsites can be challenging at the best of times but equipment is provided with each vehicle to create that gourmet meal including a propane stove, dishes, utensils and a cooler. Chairs, a table and of course a cribbage board are also provided to make your camp setup complete. Simply pack your clothes, sleeping bags, and groceries and you’ll have everything you need to camp comfortably anywhere you go.

The vehicles themselves are beginner friendly and tons of fun to drive. The 4Runner, aptly named Black Tusk, stands out in a crowd with it’s comprehensive lighting system, custom tailgate kitchen, and snorkel. Vehicles have been modified with rugged tires, suspension lifts, additional lighting and reinforced bumpers to tackle the most challenging of backroads. Safety is paramount in the wilderness especially when out of cell reception. Included in the rental is a first aid kit, vehicle recovery equipment, satellite GPS messenger and backroad map books. Pacific Backroader staff are knowledgeable about backcountry safety and are available to contact during a trip so you can focus on your adventure worry-free.
